Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954) was a Mexican painter known for her many self-portrait paintings. She was inspired by her heritage, and loved to make colorful and bright work, filled with symbolic images. As a strong and determined woman, she overcame her struggles and accomplished a great deal as an artist.

Why Draw with Guides?
You may have noticed that all of the tutorials on this website have a dashed vertical line and horizontal line running through each step. If students make their own centered lines on their own paper, before drawing, they will have an easy reference to follow. All they need to do is fold their sheet of paper in half both ways, and make a crease. The best part is, by the time the drawing is done, the creases will have disappeared!

Another Frida Coloring Option
For a darker look, try drawing on black paper with a pencil and coloring with oil pastels. When the drawing is complete, trace the lines again with a black pastel to make them really stand out.
Looking for a Follow up Project?
Now it’s easy to make a large scale mural that honors this amazing artist. All you need to do is print out the pages of a PDF template, have students color it according to the guide, and then tape it back together.
Students get to experience a fun collaborative art project and you get a large work of art for your classroom.
